Tucked away in Camberwell, this 1895-built home carries the charm of another era—and we’re honoured to be involved in its next chapter.

With heritage planning approval now received, we’ll be reinstating the original verandah, guided by archival photos showing the distinctive roofline, cast iron posts, and ornate fretwork.

Using 3D scans of the only remaining original structure—we’re carefully reconstructing key heritage details. Even the tessellated tiles and their unique patterning, typical of the era, are being documented for an accurate restoration.

Every detail matters in a project like this, and we’re excited to share more as it unfolds.

We’re thrilled to announce that we will be commencing the Home Project here at HuM Architects! After diving deep into a feasibility study with our amazing clients and collaborators at @roomfour_builders, we’re now into the design phase!

This project centres around an existing weatherboard property within a Heritage Overlay — a challenge we know well, and one we’re excited to tackle. Our team has a lot of experience navigating the approval process in these situations, and we’re all in on retaining the building’s unique character while bringing it into the modern day.

We are reworking the layout to enhance flexibility within the existing dwelling. Plus, we’re adding a rear extension to create a spacious meal, living, and kitchen area—perfect for modern living.

We’re all about sustainability. With thoughtful cross-ventilation, we’ll harness cool summer breezes and create a naturally comfortable environment all year long. A well-considered overhang will block out the harsh summer sun while letting in that beautiful winter warmth.

We will be repurposing materials—incorporating the original rear lean-to bricks into the extension and preserving the building’s unique internal and external character. It’s all about creating harmony between the old and the new!

We’re thrilled to announce that we are embarking on the Charles Project here at HuM Architects! After completing the feasibility study, we’re now diving into the design phase.

This project is all about reimagining a generational family home — making the most of the stunning views, preserving the existing structure, and incorporating the lush, mature landscaping.

Though the site and dwelling have their challenges, including a steep side slope and split-level living, the goal is to restore the home’s connection to its rear garden, enhance the entrance experience, and optimise the functionality of its interior spaces. This will be achieved by relocating the kitchen and extending the property to include a new meals area, study, living room, and a luxurious main bedroom suite.

Site is coming together with lighting, door handles, and stone installations underway. Exciting to see the external battens in place—they create a bold architectural feature while enhancing both form and function. The angled battened screen was carefully designed to cast dappled natural light, while providing shading internally at key moments of the day and maintaining privacy for the neighbouring outdoor spaces.
